About Us
The Huddersfield Support Group For Autism has for many years helped local families to get together for mutual support, encouragement and learning.
Our montly meetings are attended by parents, professionals, and children, young adults and adults with autism. The monthly meetings are relaxed and informal and we are always pleased to meet new people. After the meeting there is usually an opportunity to chat with members and ask questions.
We sometimes have a speaker. Recent speakers have talked to us about benefit entitlement and what it is like to be a young person with autism.
As well as our regular meetings the HGSA organises social events through the year. These include Crazy Kids, trips to Chester Zoo and Bridlington, and music evenings. For some of our younger members, these events are the highlight of their social callender! Many long lasting freindships have been formed at these events, especially between younger members who like to have the chance to catch up on each others news and have fun together.
One of our main aims is to support professionals working in Kirklees and beyond. Our members have many years of experience of working with, living with or being autistic. Our study day has become an annual "must do" event for many proffessionals working in this field, and we all benefit from the ideas and contacts made through this part of the group's mission. Raising awareness of autism, and promoting understanding and good practise is important to us, and we know that sharing positively with professionals our experiences, and theirs with us, is helping to build on the positive work that has been done to create services both in Kirklees are and other local authorities, schools and health and social services.
Joining the group is free; there is a voluntary donation of £5.00 per family or professional per year towards the cost of the newsletter and website.
